Everyone knows oranges are a good source of Vitamin C and fibre right ?
They are also known to be cardioprotective i.e protect the vessels of the heart and therefore the heart.
Observational evidence has shown that the higher the consumption of flavanone rich food such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons and bergamots, the lower the cardiovascular risk. of is a relationship between increasing amounts of flavanones consumption and decreasing cardiovascular risks.
It is though that the action occurs via a
- Reduction in endothelial dysfunction (basically the lining of blood vessles)
- Promotion of lowering of LDL (bad cholesterol)
- Anti-oxidant and Anti-inflammatory properties ( It has been shown than oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to athersclerotic plaques)
Flvanones are also known to help with erectile dysfunction ! It is thought this occurs via the same mechanism mentioned above- i.e by helping the lining of blood vessles that supply ‘the area’ … ;-))
Other flavonoid rich foods are berries, cherries, grapes, apples and pears.
